August 2010 Canoe Trip
We all left the church at
around 7:30 a.m. and arrived at Whispering Winds at 10:00. A few
minutes after arriving, the bus pulled in and we piled in with our gear
and everything. The bus carried us surprisingly fast and we arrived at
Akers Ferry at around noon. Once the canoes were all packed, we used the
restroom and headed out. Wednesday we canoed for about 4 miles and,
stopping every once in a while, arrived at our campsite pretty
quickly. Our campsite that night was a good one, and we had a slightly
swift current beside it, so we were able to float from farther up
stream, all the way down to our campsite. Several of the scouts were
forced to go without tents because the ones we used didn't have near
enough poles in them. That evening we all ate supper and then retired for
the evening. I didn't sleep so well because the rocks were hard and the
bugs were really biting that night. It misted really heavy that evening
and if we wouldn't have had the tarp our gear would have gotten soaked.
In the morning we woke up early and worked for a very long time trying
to get a fire going, finally, with Mr,Temple and Mr.Pattersons help we
got a nice fire going. When we had all our gear put in the canoes, and
had policed the area, we started another fun day of canoeing. The River
was cold but beautiful. We stopped by some caves and a very very cold
spring. We found a huge cave that we took some pictures of, and a few of
us wanted to camp in it, but it was against rules and if it rained it
would run right through it. We began canoeing and were forced to stop
for it was pouring down rain and lighting. We waited on the Island
until it subsided and then finished the trip stopping at a good
campsite. It was the same campsite we used last time and worked
perfectly. Mr.Patterson saved the people who didn't have tent by setting
up a tarp roof the we all slept under when it rained that
evening.Nathan got a good campfire going and we ate supper. After
supper, Caleb Murray led a campfire. There were some funny skits
involved. After the campfire, we played in the river, and went to bed.
In the morning, we all ate breakfast and packed our gear in the canoes.
We policed the area, and began our last day of canoeing. We stopped for
lunch and most of us jumped off of a at least 30 foot cliff. After
finishing eating, we canoed for six more miles, only tipping a canoe
once. ( Ian Gould and Jordan Asher). Our troop arrived at Round Springs
approximately forty-five minutes early so that we had time to swim. At
two o'clock, the bus picked us up. We stopped at the McDonald's in
Jamestown for a snack as we were all very hungry, then headed home. By: Daniel Loftin |
